Did you know that in the West the tradition is to send an anonymous card or gift to someone who you like on Valentine's Day?  For example a card or love-letter without your signature.

It's quite a different custom to the Japanese version of only females buying chocolate for males who they like...(or don't like but have to give obligation chocolate to).

 

In our English classes, we had quite lively discussions this week about the merits and demerits of each version of the day.  "What's the point of not signing your name?"  "What's the point of giving gifts to someone you don't like?" etc.  We voted and decided that a female office worker who boycotted the custom would upset her female co-workers MORE than her male co-workers.  

 

And we had a good laugh at the story of 2 workers who fell into a chocolate tank in the chocolate factory owned by Mars-Wrigley in America.  Great timing to coincide with Valentine's day!
