This month I’ve been talking with you all about holiday meals in Japan and the United States. As an expat, I enjoy my Christmas chicken in Japan and I feast on turkey in the states. And because my family is Mexican-American, I’m lucky enough to enjoy a third traditional holiday meal.
Every Christmas Eve, my extended family has a holiday party featuring tamales. This Mexican dish is made by putting seasoned meat in a corn-flour batter and wrapping it in a corn husk. They are steam cooked and served with cabbage and salsa toppings. Unwrapping a tamales before eating it is like opening a bonus Christmas present.
I hope you get the chance to try a tamale someday.
